In 2010, FPWC established the first privately managed nature protected area in Armenia, located in the Ararat and Vayots Dzor regions, where the country’s open woodland ecosystems are concentrated. These ecosystems are of high ecological value due to their rich biodiversity and significant vulnerability to climate change impacts.
Starting from 2016, in collaboration with the US Forest Service, FPWC initiated the development of a Forest Landscape Restoration (FLR) platform. This platform was designed as an integrated system to support large-scale ecological restoration through the establishment of key technical and institutional components, including a native tree nursery, a seed laboratory, and a seed bank.
SOLUTON experts provided technical support to FPWC staff and local community members in the development and operationalization of these facilities, contributing international best practices, scientific knowledge, and practical guidance for effective implementation and long-term maintenance.
Key activities and achievements include:
• Establishment of a Forest Landscape Restoration platform:
Creation of an integrated system combining nursery production, seed conservation, and scientific support for large-scale restoration activities.
• Development of restoration infrastructure:
Support for the design, setup, and maintenance of a native tree nursery, seed laboratory, and seed bank to ensure sustainable supply of high-quality planting material.
• Technical and capacity-building support:
Provision of expert assistance and training to FPWC staff and local community members, incorporating international experience and scientific approaches.
• Strengthening community-based management:
Involvement of local governance structures in the operation and continued management of the FLR platform, ensuring local ownership and sustainability.
As a result, the initiative has created a long-term foundation for forest landscape restoration in Armenia, strengthening ecosystem resilience and biodiversity conservation through a science-based and community-driven approach, and is currently managed by the Urtsadzor community council in Ararat region.
