This initiative focuses on strengthening the management and conservation of key protected areas in Armenia, including the Shikahogh State Reserve and the Zangezur, Khustup, Plane Grove, and Sev Lich State Sanctuaries. The program aims to enhance biodiversity protection, ensure sustainable use of natural resources, and provide a clear framework for long-term ecosystem conservation and governance.

Key objectives and activities of the program include:

  • Comprehensive ecological assessments:
Conducting detailed studies of flora, fauna, habitat conditions, and ecosystem services to establish a scientific foundation for management planning.

  • Socio-economic and stakeholder analysis:
Evaluating the interactions between local communities and the protected areas to identify opportunities for sustainable livelihoods, community engagement, and conflict resolution.

  • Development of site-specific management plans:
Preparing structured management plans for each protected area, including zoning, permitted activities, conservation priorities, monitoring protocols, and risk mitigation strategies.

  • Capacity building for reserve staff and stakeholders:
Providing training, technical guidance, and resources to strengthen the institutional capacity for effective implementation of management measures.

  • Monitoring and evaluation framework:
Establishing indicators and protocols to track ecological integrity, biodiversity trends, and the effectiveness of conservation interventions over time.

  • Integration with national biodiversity and conservation strategies:
Aligning management plans with Armenia’s broader environmental policies and international commitments, ensuring coordinated and sustainable governance of the protected areas.

  •

By implementing this program, Armenia enhances the conservation and resilience of some of its most critical ecosystems, promotes sustainable community participation, and establishes robust frameworks for the long-term protection of biodiversity and natural heritage.
