Armenia, situated within the biologically rich Caucasus ecoregion, is internationally recognized as one of the global biodiversity hotspots identified by Conservation International. The country hosts a remarkable diversity of ecosystems and high levels of endemism, including valuable forest landscapes that are essential for ecological balance, climate regulation, and local community well-being. The Aragatsotn region, in particular, is notable for its forest resources, which, despite their ecological and socio-economic importance, are increasingly exposed to pressures such as unsustainable use, climate change impacts, and limited management capacity.
The project to develop of a Management Plan for the Aragatsotn Forest Enterprise aims to strengthen sustainable forest governance and ensure long-term, science-based forest management in the region. Key activities and achievements of the project include:
• Comprehensive situational analysis:
Field and desk study conducted to assess the current state of forest resources, institutional capacities, and key constraints and opportunities for sustainable forest management.
• Strategic planning and operational programming:
Developed strategic directions and practical management programs to guide the long-term sustainable development of the Aragatsotn Forest Enterprise.
• Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) framework development:
Prepared in line with Armenian environmental legislation to ensure that planned activities comply with national environmental standards and safeguard ecological integrity.
• Institutional strengthening and capacity building:
Measures implemented to enhance the planning, management, and technical capacities of the Forest Enterprise staff and relevant stakeholders.
• Sustainable forest resource management integration:
The project promotes the application of sustainable forest management principles, balancing conservation objectives with responsible resource use and local development needs.
As a result, the Aragatsotn Forest Enterprise is better equipped with a structured management plan and operational tools for sustainable forest governance. The project significantly contributes to strengthening institutional capacity, improving forest planning systems, and promoting the sustainable use and conservation of forest resources in Armenia.
