The project to establish the Dilijan Biosphere Reserve aimed to create a strong foundation for biodiversity conservation and sustainable resource management in this critical region. Key activities and achievements of the project include:

  • Comprehensive ecological, social, and economic assessments:
Conducted to provide a scientific basis for the planning and zoning of the biosphere reserve.

  • Participatory zoning and boundary definition:
Boundaries, zoning, and core functions of the future Dilijan Biosphere Reserve were defined through an inclusive process, systematically identifying key sectors, ecological and cultural values, and existing and potential threats.

  • Governance and institutional development:
Governance structures and potential financing mechanisms were discussed to ensure long-term sustainable management.

  • Stakeholder engagement:
A local working group with more than 30 members was established, complemented by regular intersectoral coordination meetings, ensuring broad participation and ownership.

  • Capacity building and technical support:
Measures implemented strengthened the institutional, technical, and societal foundations necessary for effective biosphere reserve management.

  • Climate resilience and sustainable resource use:
The initiative promotes the practical integration of climate protection and adaptation strategies, balancing biodiversity conservation with the sustainable use of natural resources․

As a result, the Dilijan region is well prepared to be nominated as Armenia’s first model region under the UNESCO “Man and the Biosphere” (MAB) Programme. The project significantly contributes to the long-term resilience of this climate-vulnerable region, while supporting sustainable development and the protection of Armenia’s unique biodiversity.

Implementation Period: 12/2023 - 11/2025
